It is a deciduous, broadleaf, perennial shrub. Medium growth. Gets 8-10ft. tall and 5-8ft. wide. Likes sun to half shade. Hardy to 0 degrees.

Genus of 10 - 15 species of deciduous trees and shrubs comes from N. temperate regions, usually found in woodland. They have alternate, rounded or oval to ovate leaves, sometimes with heartshaped bases. Hazels are grown for their foliage and yellow male catkins. Some species produce edible nuts.

C. avellana cultivars are upright or tree-like shrubs with broadly heart-shaped, round-tipped, toothed, mid-green leaves, to 4in (10cm) long. Pendent yellow catkins, 1.5 - 2.5in (4-6cm) long, appear in late winter and early spring.'Contora' has strongly twisted shoots, which are useful for flower arrangements. Also called 'Corkscrew Hazel'.
