Mimosa, Silk Tree

A deciduous shrub or small tree (12-20ft./4-6m) with a domed crown when mature. Could grow to 40ft.(12m) depending which book you read. It grows rapidly but can be short lived. The canopy can be twice as wide as it is high. It is a native to Asia, ranging from Iran to Japan. Has pink flowers in the summer and the numerous seedlings can be a nuisance. They have attractive fern like leaves.

Light: Full sun to partial shade.

Temperature: Down to 15oF/-9.4oC

Likes sandy well drained soil and likes to be watered about once a month. If less water is used, it will grow slower and the leaves will look yellowish. Fertilizing is not required.

Pests: Are usually not a problem.

FDA zones 6-9.
